How does one file for the First-Time Home buyers Tax Credit if one does not have a HUD-1 Settlement Statement?

It appears to me that a HUD-1 form is required for verification by the IRS. According to the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, a HUD-1 form is required before the date of settlement only on the purchase of a home involving a federally-related loan. I paid cash for my modest (inexpensive…very inexpensive) home and no loan was involved. I did not receive a HUD-1 form. I do have a settlement statement prepared by the broker(not HUD-1), a bill of sale and a “property transfer tax return”. Are any of these documents useful? How can a I claim this credit? Settlement on the home was mid-August 2009.

You can simply ask the title firm which handled the closing to prepare a HUD-1. It’s not that difficult. They can retrieve your purchase information and provide the form.
